Ethic vs. ethnity

Today we discussed about ethics governed by ourselves. This was really good opportunity for

me to check if my behavior, value and attitude are going smoothly based on the standard I have

set. During class discussion, I was surprised by the variety of ethics held by my RA companies.

Each has his/her own rationale to express his/her ethics to this world. I know there is no right

answer for this, but I would love to see (if there is any) the standard ethics preferred by our

society. This society, I consider this as USA, requires us to retain ethics that shapes our behavior

in way that may not cause any danger or threat to other people. When I looked at the inside of

myself, I could find my self somewhat obsessed with such priority adopted to me.

Here is my dilemma, I came from collectivist culture, the south Korea where indifference toward

misbehavior of other is not acceptable ethically. We have to say something. Sometimes people go

beyond their right in that they violate any right of others. Korean Society has strong function to

shape one's value, behavior and ethics by the major group forcing the minor to accept their

value. It doesn't mean that such function doesn't exist in the U.S., I am saying such function is

specifically strong in the south Korea. Maybe there are countries showing even the stronger

function.

I have stayed in the U.S. for 5 years and have believed that I have forgot my attitude to

convince and force other to accept my values. I have accepted value predominant here, and have

been extra careful to act against it. The value is balance.

Anyway, during RA class, we discuss if bringing a call girl on the campus as a RA is ethically

right. My answer was No, but there are at least 90 percent of students say Yes under the name

of freedom. I could find myself engaged into the discussion deeply. I also found that I was little

bit upset about different values.

For last 3 years at UMBC, my perception has been solely toward academic record including resume. Now RA class provides me eye openning experience toward things that touch any value and life experience.

As I always say about this class, RA class triggers something base of my heart and perception.

  1. Wow... Jiyong... this was so interesting to read. I can tell that the RA class really struck a cord with you. Your thoughts about your own ethics vs. the ethics of this country is striking. I'm glad to hear that the RA class has given you a lot to think about. It does open your eyes and make you think twice as you make sense of things for yourself. It's good at making you think about your approaches with residents too.. because often they face the same ethical dilemmas as student leaders.
